artist statement

I paint, using oil on canvas, or watercolor and pastels on cotton rag. I prefer nonobjective or abstract art, and my art is loosely drawn from the built and the natural world. I usually am working with an unstated abstract idea such as wholeness- the unity of the natural world, or perhaps femininity or feminine strength. While that might be my starting point, my primary objective is to create a visually satisfying artwork.

I love the accident and the surprise of working wet into wet. I love the materials and the endless possibilities of combining color, form, space, and line. The paintings are united by my love of bright mineral pigments and vivid coloration. I love to flood a field of color across a page, then work marks and shapes into the field.
